Pack A First-Night Box, You Won’t Regret It!

As is the case with many things in life, organization is key. And moving is no different. Setting aside the items you will need on the first night and preparing for the immediate days following your move will do wonders.

As Life Hacker points out, who wants to spend time rummaging through boxes to find work clothes or cosmetics after landing in your new address? Definitely not me, and I’m guessing not you either. Packing a First Night Box can help you avoid this hassle.

What is a First Night Box?

This box is reserved for items that you and your family will need on the first night or couple of days immediately after your move. Regardless if your furniture and boxes will arrive at the same time as you, settling in will likely take a few days. So, setting aside a box for the essential items of your everyday routine can help make for a smooth transition into your new home.

So, what should be included in a First Night Box?

Here are a few ideas:

#1 Work and/or school clothes

#2 Workout shoes and other gear

#3 Cosmetics, makeup, etc.

#4 Prescriptions and other medical/health related items

#5 Important documents (In fact, we suggest organizing these into a binder.)

#6 Electronics and their chargers (phones, laptops, smart-watches, etc.)

#7 Cookware and other kitchen supplies (For convenience, you might consider using paper/plastic during this temporary time.)

#8 Bed sheets, pillows, blankets, jammies, and any other necessary night-time items

#9 Keys (home, car, office, etc.) and wallet (drivers license, credit cards, etc.)

Remember, not every move and every schedule is the same.

Think about your daily routine and check your calendar for any upcoming events in the days immediately following your move. Ask yourself what items will likely be your “must-haves” during this time. Especially if you expect that settling into your home will take longer than a few days, plan for this. Think about what you might need as you start to get your new household up and running.

And, of course, be sure that you keep track of where your this box is located during transit, so that your First Night Box can work its magic once you arrive at your new address.
